Maintaining good oral health is much more than simply brushing twice a day, and checking your breath before you put on a face-covering before heading to the shops.
Aside from the well-publicised dangers of DIY teeth whitening kits, there are things that dental hygienists want people to know about their teeth,
Brush Before Breakfast
Brushing before breakfast means the fluoride will protect your teeth while you eat. If you have your cereal, coffee, or orange juice before, then when you brush you risk rubbing those sugars and acids into the enamel (the hard outer layer of the tooth), which can lead to dental decay and erosion.
Watch Your Pressure
We are all aware of the dangers of not brushing your teeth, but it’s important not to over-brush them too. Scrubbing your teeth and gums can cause irreversible and permanent wearing away of the gums, known as gum recession. Use an electric toothbrush, and allow the brush to do the work.
Floss Before Bed
Brushing can only clean about 60 per cent of our teeth, so flossing can clean in between teeth and around the gum, which helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It’s recommended to floss once a day, and preferably at night to give your mouth a thorough clean after the meals you’ve eaten during the day.
Don’t Neglect Your Gums
Your gums are an indicator of your overall health. Gums that are firm and pink with no bleeding are healthy, and anything that varies from that can be a sign of an underlying concern. An unhealthy mouth may increase the risk of other health problems. Always get checked out by a dentist if you have any concerns.
