It can be intimidating to visit the dentist, especially if you haven’t been in a few years, even though oral health experts recommend you visit twice a year.
Ask any dentist, and they will insist they would never judge a patient by their teeth, but they do have some pet peeves, whether it’s breaking the rules of dental etiquette, or, seeing as home teeth whitening kits have soared in popularity during the lockdown, using untested home treatments that could damage teeth.
Whether it’s a reflex reaction, or you’re embarrassed about your teeth, many people instinctively cover their mouths when the dentist leans in to look. But the dentist is there to help, which they can’t do if you’re scared to show them.
Another dangerous reflex is the urge to dodge the anaesthesia needle when the dentist is preparing you for a procedure. If your dentist is leaning towards you brandishing a needle, it’s maybe unwise to grab them and try to avoid it.
It should really go without saying, but always brush your teeth before visiting your dentist. No dentist wants to see the remnants of your breakfast or lunch or snacks stuck in your teeth. Ask for a toothbrush before you go in, to ensure you’ve removed any debris.
Do avoid brushing your teeth directly after acidic foods or drinks, such as orange juice or coffee, as they will soften the enamel on your teeth, which then brushing can damage further. Wait 30 minutes before brushing.
Patients armed with a diagnosis from Google are certainly not so welcome from any medical profession. An ill-informed Google search is never going to be better than the professional opinion of a trained, experienced dentist.
Be wary of trends and home remedies such as charcoal toothpaste, which can be harsh on sensitive teeth, or non-professional whitening procedures and kits. Some procedures are best left to professionals, and often trends have no medical benefits and could cause damage.
